Holiday Edition

Happy Holidays!
PGAMA will be closed for Christmas and on December 26.
We will also be closed on New Years Day and on January 2.
We wish each of you a safe and happy holiday season!

Small Member Hit by $250,000 Embezzlement
A member of PGAMA with less than 10 employees recently learned the hard way that it is often smaller companies with long-time trusted employees that are subject to employee theft. A seemingly very honest, very long-tenured bookkeeper had, over the past ten years or more, embezzled $250,000.  Though the employee was finally caught and is now serving a nine year prison term, the printer was uninsured, and will likely never recover any of the lost funds. Employee dishonesty coverage is very inexpensive and should be a part of your company’s insurance package. We have seen this kind of thing many times. As small as your association staff is, we carry $250,000 of insurance coverage for this type of loss. When we handled insurance funds we had $1 million in coverage.

Buying Power Program Updates
There are several changes to the Buying Power programs members need to be aware of:

Adobe: Due to the security issues that Adobe was experiencing with their on-line store, there have been some modifications to how our members can access the 15% discount. Members should go to the Buying Power page at www.printing.org and click on Adobe. You will then need to click on the “members-only” link which will provide them with a link to the new Adobe page. On this page, you will need to fill out an online form including your 6 digit member ID number, company name, and email address. You will then receive via email a special URL for the Adobe on-line store. This URL will only work once and then it will be de-activated. If you want to make future purchases, you must fill out the on-line form again and get a new URL to the store.

FedEx: Members will need to provide their 6-digit Printing Industries of America member ID on their enrollment form. Previously, members were providing the full 10-digit number (with added zeroes), but this seemed to be causing confusion so FedEx updated their system. If you do not know your 6-digit Printing Industries of America ID, contact Carol Atwood at PGAMA, 410-319-0900.

Get Ready to Fight "Free Choice" Act
The biggest and most important promise President-elect Obama made to organized labor during his campaign was the commitment to sign the inaccurately named "Employee Free Choice Act" into law. The AFL-CIO wants this legislation passed because it takes away employees' right to secret ballot voting when deciding for or against union representation in their workplace (hence the reference to being inaccurately named.) The proposed Act also provides that if the employer does not agree to a contract within 120 days, the government will impose a contract. In the first few days of the new Congress, this Bill will come up again, and we will need to unite to let Congress know that this Act is an insult to American principles. Learn more about this bill at http://myprivateballot.com.

The Ghost of Printing Future
Yes, printing does have a future. But much like Ebenezer Scrooge, that future will largely be determined by what those of us within the industry do to affect it. The future will not (and cannot) look like the past. Instead of ink-on-paper specialists, the successful printing business of tomorrow is a total solution specialist for each of their clients. Some businesses will focus on the low end of this business model, simply providing web-to-print. Others will exemplify the high end, by offering turn-key solutions to clients' marketing needs through hands-on service. All approaches will likely use digital (or perhaps inkjet) workflows to reduce cost and improve quality. The survivors will understand that value pricing, not cost driven pricing, combined with full utilization of overhead is the key to profits and the ability to fund expansion.
