Does Your Sales Compensation Measure Up?

Want to know if your company is paying more (or less) to sales staff than other local businesses? Find out in a new PGAMA report. Packed with useful facts like average starting salaries, commission rates, and other compensation methods and benefits, the 2008 PGAMA Print Salespersons Compensation Survey is a useful tool for evaluating your sales compensation arrangements. The brief (just 13 pages) study compiles information from 43 local companies employing a total of 249 salespersons. The report is available in electronic format (PDF) for $75 for members, $175 for non-members. (Member companies who participated in the survey received a free copy.) To order your copy, call PGAMA or visit www.pgama.com.

More Verification Needed When Hiring

Every employer hiring new employees needs to know about additional changes to the Employment Eligibility Verification (Form I-9) process. Basically, the revised process narrows the acceptable forms of identification to prove employment eligibility. Employers will no longer be allowed to accept expired documents to verify employment authorization. Also eliminated as acceptable ID are Form I-688, "Temporary Resident Cards," and Forms I-688A and I-688B, "Employment Authorization Cards." Added to the list of acceptable ID are passports from the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) and the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI). The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) implemented the changes to let employers verify acceptable documents more easily and single out false documents in order to improve the security of the verification process and ensure a legal workforce. To review the complete text of changes go to www.uscis.gov/files/nativedocuments/I-9IFR.pdf.

Food Drive Report: A Ton of Good News

PGAMA members once again showed their generosity during the annual Food Drive, collecting nearly a ton of non-perishable food items. Member company Walker Supply spearheads the charitable effort, and split the haul evenly between the Maryland Food Bank and the Manna Food Center in Rockville, MD.

Proof that Direct Mail Works

Sheriff Tom Dart of Cook County (Chicago, IL) bagged 60 criminals with a targeted mailing to 230 people with outstanding warrants-- a phenomenal 26% response rate to direct mail! The sheriff sent each fugitive a fake "Shoptastic Solutions" mailing saying they had been chosen for a shopping survey to help local retailers. The mail piece asked the individuals to call a Chicago hotel and make a reservation. The 60 people who responded to the mailing and showed up at the hotel were arrested on the scene.

Buyer Seeks Small Company

An interested buyer has contacted PGAMA and is looking to purchase a small printing company (less than $1 million annual sales) in metro D.C. The buyer actually wants to buy the operation not just the sales. If interested in this opportunity, contact Art at PGAMA, 410-319-0900.
