Employee Free Choice Act Reintroduced in Congress

The so-called "Employee Free Choice Act" (or EFCA)--which is anything but--was introduced in the U.S. House and Senate last week, and so far has the support of 223 Representatives and 40 Senators. With President Obama and House leadership offering their full support, the battle over passage will be waged in the Senate. Unions across the country coordinated events to show support and are investing in an extensive campaign to push undeclared Senators to support the bill. Printing Industries is working with the Coalition for a Democratic Workplace to reach out to lawmakers, run advertising opposing the bill, and solicit media opposition to EFCA. Printing Industries has also issued an Advocacy Alert to members, asking for their help by contacting their lawmakers. More information on the bill and how it would negatively impact jobs and the economy is available at www.myprivateballot.com.

Benefits for MD Employees with Reduced Hours

As the recession continues, Maryland members are once again reminded about a program called "worksharing" that can help you avoid layoffs and still reduce your payroll costs. If a firm reduces their work week to 32 hours or less, the employees could be eligible for unemployment benefits for the hours they are off each week. Info about this program was first published in the January issue of Management Bulletin, with full details disclosed in the March 5 edition of eNews. Check out the article in the eNews archive.
(Note: This is a MD program. No such program exists in PA, VA, or D.C.)

New Standards for Flat Mail Coming Soon

New standards for commercial flat-size mail go into effect on March 29, 2009. Mailers must address each piece using a minimum of 8-point type. Each character must be at least 0.080 inches high. If the mail piece bears a POSTNET or Intelligent Mail barcode with a delivery point routing code, mailers may use 6-point type in all capital letters. Each character must be at least 0.065 inches high. Of all automation pieces, and Bound Printed Matter pieces claiming a barcode discount, the characters in the address must not overlap, the address lines must not touch or overlap, and each address element may be separated by no more than five blank character spaces. (A blank character space can equal the width of the widest letter used in the type.) Mailers must place the delivery address in the “top half” of the mail piece (except First Class). For more info, go to Postal Explorer (pe.usps.com) or subscribe to the DMM Advisory. To subscribe, send an e-mail to dmmadvisory@usps.com. Simply indicate "subscribe" in the subject line.

Led by Lean Logistics expert Robert Martichenko, it reviews the guiding principles of Lean and emphasizes the need to incorporate Lean Logistics in order to reduce lead times and inventory. He speaks about the devastating effects of overproduction and the need for intense efforts to reduce lead time. He articulates the philosophy that Toyota has used to become the world’s dominant automotive manufacturer.
