Law” poster.
2- Print and post the new
version of the “EEO is the Law” poster
3-Order

Truths About Printing
The
Print Council has released a new brochure, Why Print is Green that
lists 10 specific ways print is green, from the responsible
products used, renewable energy sources, increased recycling rates, improved
design and delivery methods, and more. The brochure is intended for use
by printers and designers to demonstrate to their customers why print media
is the environmentally sound choice for communicating with the audiences
they want to reach. Among the facts in the document:
- In 2008 more than 57 percent of
paper consumed in the U.S. was recovered for recycling, more than any other
material
- Although nationwide less than
10 percent of power comes from renewable resources, across the pulp and
paper industry that figure is greater than 60 percent.
- The average person's paper use
for a YEAR is produced by 500 kilowatt-hours of electricity. That same
amount powers one computer for only five months.

Member Benefit: FREE JDF Webinar
Printing Industries of America’s recent webinar,
Success Stories in JDF Automation, is now available for FREE as
an exclusive member benefit. During challenging economic times, many companies
intensify their efforts to become more efficient and drive out needless costs.
The use of automation and JDF (job definition format) files to automate processes
is already having a profound impact in this way for some printers. This webinar
focuses on how to incorporate new technologies via JDF automation and its
real world results. Check it out at www.printing.org/free.
Business
Trend: Advertising Specialties
A glance at the Vistaprint website
shows that they have added advertising specialties to their line, and
for the quarter ending September 30th, the company reported a sales increase
of 27% to an annual rate of $450 million with net income of 8.9% (up
57% over the previous period.) Incredibly, it also reported receiving
65,000 orders a day during the quarter, and adding 1.6 million new customers!
Their secret? Standard industry technology combined with a highly automated
front end. It's a process that has lessons for all: become really good
at some component of the manufacturing process. Streamline the front
end and eliminate paper shuffling. And finally, think about advertising
specialties as a line extension. Get started by reviewing the information
about ASI on www.pgama.com under
Group Buying.

Ways to Improve Sales Calls
Consultant Linda Bishop shares these five
tips:
- Walk into calls believing your customer
is likeable. If you don't like them, you won't be able
to sell to them.
- Speak confidently, arranging sentences
in a logical order. Make it easy for listeners to follow
and understand your meaning.
- Scan your own body language frequently
to ensure it is congruent with the impression you want
to make.
- Ignore distractions--internal and external!
Stay 100% focused on the conversation.
- Don't interrupt. Easy to say, but hard
to do!

Tech
Tip of the Week: Transparency & Fonts
Joe Marin, Senior Analyst, Digital Technologies,
offers this tip on transparency and fonts: When
it was first introduced by Adobe, transparency was (and
to some degree, still is) a bane to the prepress production
community. Transparency gives creatives the ability to incorporate
elements into their designs that previously were not possible.
However, if transparency is not used judiciously in a document,
problems can arise when the job is printed on press.
One of the most common situations
associated with transparency is, when it is used in conjunction
with fonts, the fonts are sometimes converted to outlines.
The problem with this is that when fonts are converted
to outlines, the text becomes bolder, or “fatter.” While
you may not be able to see this easily on an inkjet proof
or PDF file, you will most certainly see this when the
job is output and printed on press. The solution to this
problem is fairly simple: To keep fonts from converting
to outlines when text is used with transparency, make sure
that the text is on the top layer of all objects in a transparency
stack.
